Argentina Customs & Etiquettes

Men are usually very gentle and apparently passionate with women, they use a lot of flattery and are ready to offer dinners and drinks, without being heavy or vulgar. Amongst men there is often a sort of camaraderie. At the base of this behaviour there is certainly a more or less patent machismo, which is nonetheless lived as a light game. Generally, people are very nice and open. Their interest for strangers is very strong. Because every Argentine has a European ancestor, the relationship they have with foreigners is a participating one, rather than a suspicious one, as is the case of many other countries.

Typical entertainment vary from the extraordinary offer of Buenos Aires, with tango in the first place, to theatres of international level to local shows and events, and typical parties in the provincial areas.

In Argentina it is typical to greet people with a kiss on the cheek, even total strangers that are introduced for the first time. Usually this happens amongst men, too, even if normally, in this case, the first time they shake hands, and the second they share a kiss. The meeting ends with a kiss and a "ciao".

The mate, national drink, needs to be mentioned separately. It is indeed very strange and peculiar to see well-dressed people on foot, on public transports etc., carrying one or two thermos under the arm and a glass in their hand (sometimes the glasse is incorporated in the thermos top). The thermos contains hot water that is poured in the glass after filling it with yerba mate, a strong and bitter herb, that calms thirst.

Drinking mate is a ritual from North to South, a convivial ritual. You do not drink mate without offering it to the persons you are with, you drink as long as you have got water in your glass, and then you make it go back to fill it up again and pass it to other people. One of the most beautiful and accurate objects in Argentina is the "bombija", a metal can with small holes on the bottom extremity so that the mate can be tasted without letting the herb get to your mouth. A ready-to-drink expresso, to be prepared at any time, to the point that in Argentina instead of coffee machines offices have "hot water" machines, to prepare mate.

Mate is the national drink, has a precise rituality and an ancient history. When the Europeans arrived, they realised that the indigenous people were stronger here and got sick less than those in Central America, thanks to the mate! The yerba mate is a very big tree, that can grow to several meters. Nowadays the plantations are to the North of the subtropical climates, and and consist of low bushes. The yerba mate is produced in the provinces of Misiones and Corrientes, dried and powdered, put into bags and sent to every corner of the country.
